Driver F1rst and Capacity Solutions: two products, one design system
Driver F1rst is CRST's Android app for drivers, on phone and tablet. Capacity Solutions is their web logistics board and fleet management app. Tri Lion led UI design for both as part of Design for Context's team, working alongside their UX designers on and off across three and a half years: two on Driver F1rst and a year and a half on Capacity Solutions.
The challenge
CRST drivers live in their trucks, not at desks. Loads, pay, inspections, and permits were spread across phone calls, paperwork, and separate systems. CRST needed one app a driver could trust at 5 AM in a truck stop lot, in gloves, in bad light. On the other side, planners and dispatchers needed one place to manage hundreds of loads, stops, and carriers without losing the thread.
WHAT WE DID
Driver F1rst covers a driver's working life in 400+ screens: load board and rate breakdowns, pay and settlement history, inspections, maintenance reports, a digital glovebox for permits by state, trip maps with live weather, messaging, and hours-of-service dials that change color as limits approach. Every screen has a tablet layout, and a "while driving" mode scales type and numbers up on the dashboard and hours-of-service screens. Capacity Solutions is built around Control Tower: a dense board where teams track orders and trucks, scan status in seconds, and find capacity without leaving the screen. Underneath both is one tokenized Figma design system and an icon library of hundreds of icons in four sizes, covering every shipping mode, hazmat state, and workflow step.
what went well
Three and a half years in, the system holds. New features, new screens, and new people on the team, and it still looks like one product. One design system serves drivers and planners, and CRST's product team keeps building from it without waiting on us. That's the real test of a design system, and it's the kind of long-term partnership we like best.
